For the folks reading this, you may have noticed that the site looks pretty much exactly the same this week as it did last. Don't fear though. After experimenting more with the new section being unveiled soon, we decided that it's worth the extra time to put a few more things together before releasing it to you for use.
I'm excited about the growth of the Skis Database... people keep adding skis every day. Joel Hughes at FifteenOff.com was gracious enough put a huge endorsement up for the ski log, and we've been adding users to that as well.
It will be really great down the line with the ski log to be able to look at your progress over time as well as scores and settings. Keeping your log up to date this summer will help you in the future!
Update Holding Pattern
Updates Set to Roll Next Week
Last week you may have read something about a forthcoming ski log update. Well, one thing lead to another (and then snowballed)... at this point, you can look for updates to happen real soon... I would say Monday night, if I had to guess.
Look for an improved Skis section, that will allow you to add a ski to your log much more easily. Also, we'll be providing stock settings on a variety of models. I'll be busting out the finishing touches this weekend.
Facbook Changes Back TOS, Spiders On Chemicals
The fellows at Facebook are pretty on it. They've already reverted back to their last Terms of Service document, and have made some comments on the developments. The terms of service reads fair now:
So, are you going to delete your Facebook account now?
The terms that they changed to last week eliminated this option. Deleting your Facebook account now will ensure that you can delete your information before they assert their rights to your content without notice at a later date...
In other news, in a 1965 study, this Canadian doctor discovered spiders respond differently when given different chemicals. The results were interesting, to say the least...
Facebook Changes Terms of Service
Facebook recently updated their terms of service with a pretty serious change. They're betting that no one cares, and I think they're probably right. Whether or not people should care is another story. Here's what you agree to by using the facebook:
You hereby grant Facebook an irrevocable, perpetual, non-exclusive, transferable, fully paid, worldwide license (with the right to sublicense) to (a) use, copy, publish, stream, store, retain, publicly perform or display, transmit, scan, reformat, modify, edit, frame, translate, excerpt, adapt, create derivative works and distribute (through multiple tiers), any User Content you (i) Post on or in connection with the Facebook Service or the promotion thereof subject only to your privacy settings or (ii) enable a user to Post, including by offering a Share Link on your website and (b) to use your name, likeness and image for any purpose, including commercial or advertising, each of (a) and (b) on or in connection with the Facebook Service or the promotion thereof.
Wow. That was comprehensive. Even more so than nine sympathetic apathetic diabetic old men on roller skates with a marked propensity for procrastination and sloth.
The long and short of it is that by posting content on Facebook, you are giving the rights to that content to a private corporation, forever, without any recourse, and you can't have it back.
Do you think this is a privacy issue?

Party Like it's 1234567890
That's today! Friday the 13th of February, 2009, at exactly 3:31:30 we'll pass 1,234,567,890 seconds since the beginning of the "Unix Epoch". The Unix Epoch corresponds to zero when the time was January 1, 1970, and has been counting the ticks ever since. This is the format that most modern computers (especially webservers) measure time with, rather than the 3:31:30 that makes sense to us.
So what does this amazing mile marker signify? Well, pretty much nothing. But it's not likely we'll ever get that one second back. Oddly enough, it seems that this time coincides perfectly with the time that our database server crashed...
Lapse in Service, Friday the 13th 3:30PM - 5:00PM EST
Ick! I hate posting things like this. We had some problems with the database server this afternoon but now things are cleared up. There's an outside possibility this may reoccur, but hopefully not.
As far as I can tell we didn't loose any data - unless you were the lucky winner to post exactly the right time that the server went down.
A bunch of new skis were added this week and the skis database is getting large enough to warrant some new updates that we'll roll out next week.
Thanks for reading, and again sorry for the short outage.
USAWS Releases Nationals Schedule
USAWaterSki put out the official schedule for the
2009 Goode Water Ski nationals.
New on the agenda for this year's nationals, the old guy's pro tour
will be making a prominent appearance as a "separate" sanctioned
event at West Palm Beach. I'm sure there will be many more kids
excited to see their parents ski the big dog than pros ski the US Open.
*Rolls Eyes*
No news on that US Open yet, "USA Water Ski's Premier Event".
September? 50/50 shot?

New Skis Added Today
We've been getting a lot of new ski submissions for the database -- so keep 'em coming!
Newly added today were the 2005 HO Monza, the 2006 D3 Nomad, a few different Connelly Concepts, HO NOS (2008 & 2009) the 2008 Nomad RCX... and by the time I hit post on this message we probably will have a few more!
Also we added a few new ski pictures. We're always looking to expand the images collection so that all the skis can have their own image - if you see that we're missing something please let us know.
Also we had a question on the forum regarding using 2 skis at once. Some of you, for instance, might ski on two different models frequently. I've seen a number of skiers going with a wider ski at a little slower speed, and then a more traditionally shaped ski for their regular rip'ah.
In this case you still will only have one "active" ski at a time. Use your ski rack: to switch between skis when you swap them on your feet. This will be simplified in future updates, but for right now, it's important to make sure that your ski is selected before you log a set. Whatever ski is active when you log your set is going to be associated with that set that you log.
So remember, select your active ski before logging a new set!

Board Up Miami Has it Right
Wow, I just read this story on USA Water Ski about Board Up Miami. An ameteur wakekeboard contest with a cash prize of $10,000! Sure, that's for men and women combined, but these folks have got to be doing something right if they can nearly match the singe-division payout minimum at a Pro Event... Not to mention the fact it's going to up-and-commers!
Turns out that Board Up also features swimsuit fashion shows. I mean, come on. You've got the sport and you've got swimsuit shows. Mixed together?? Winner!

The "2008 Radar RS-1"
Some of you might be looking for the Radar RS-1 from 2008 in our database
Even if you purchased an RS-1 in 2008, it's still the 2009 model. The 2008 model from Radar was the MPD. This is the way we're going to keep track of it, too.
If you happen to have got one of the Nationals Edition, just note that in your "Flex" description.
